Join the global fight

Leaders from 139 countries are at the United Nations headquarters in New York, USA, for a three-day summit that starts today to review the progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals – a set of eight targets to fight hunger, disease and ignorance to be met by 2015.

There are mixed reports on whether the goals will be met or not by 2015, so the purpose of the summit is to get the schedule back on track. According to aid groups, the European Union is expected to announce US$1 billion (S$1.33 billion) of MDG funds and the World Bank US$750 million for education.

Laid out in 2000 by all 192 United Nations member states and 23 international orgainisations, the Millennium Development Goals are:

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme Poverty and Hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality Rate
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development

At Mumbai Smiles, we work every day towards achieving these goals and contributing to the global movement. Show your support for us and this global campaign in any way you can.
